I woke up this morning with a spring in my step because I realised it’s 10th annual Wacky Wine Weekend this week! It feels like forever-ago that I booked my accommodation and now the time has finally arrived!
This year I’m introducing the festival to some wacky wine-loving first-timers and, for those of you out there who are still deciding what they should do this weekend, here are 10 reasons why you should definitely be heading to Robertson:
1. You can win your weight in wine:
Bonnievale cellars runs this weigh-in competition every year – make sure you pile on the jackets and boots for those extra kilos :-)
2. You can slurp oysters and sip bubbly:
A number of farms offer great MCCs and sparkling wines with oysters, such as Bon Courage, De Wetshof and Graham Beck.
3. You can watch live music:
Arabella always throws a big party called Arabella Live. One of the headlining acts this year is Locnville. Rietvallei is hosting Mr Cat and the Jackal and Graham Beck also has live jazz during the day and the evening concert on Saturday night features Karen Zoid and Arno Carstens.
4. You can buy wine at very affordable prices:
Besides the draw-card of cellar-door prices, many farms offer additional discounts and bargain deals on their wines. Last year Van Zylshof had a 'buy 2 get 1 bottle free' special – so worth it!
5. You can blend your own wine:
For R50 per bottle, you can blend, label and take home a bottle of your own wine at Excelsior estate. Wandsbeck also provides the opportunity for visitors to blend their own wine for R35.
6. You can do a brandy tasting:
Visit Klipdrift Distillary and for R40 you can have a guided tour followed by a tasting.
7. You can Braai:
A few of the farms will be offering awesome braai food, such as Le Roux and Fourie Wines, which has a Kudu&Sprinbok braai on offer and McGregor Winery, which offers a steak braai and rodeo.
8. You can taste wine straight from the barrel:
Visit Lord’s Winery to do a barrel tasting of their Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz or Major’s Hill for a barrel tasting and cellar tour.
9. You can indulge in artisan cheese and olives:
Cheese and olive tastings will be held at estates such as Goedverwacht, Cloverfield and Rooiberg. Viljoensdrift offers amazing picnic fare, which you can eat on a boat cruise down the Breede if the weather permits.
10. You can enjoy an amazing weekend away with friends, filled with fabulous wine and food in a beautiful setting.
